Watching ripples on the electron sea

electronwave

The electrons within a metal act like a sea of electric charge, free to flow as a fluid, giving the metal its high conductivity. Just like ripples on the surface of the ocean, the sea of electrons can propagate as waves over the metal surface. Although these charge waves and their electric fields can be described mathematically, observing them in time and space has been an enormous challenge – that is until recently. This podcast chronicles research to develop techniques to "watch ripples on the electron sea".
